“Be the change you want to see in the world.”
That popular slogan (above) can be understood in several ways. Let’s start with attribution. According to sources, Mahatma Gandhi did not say that, although what he said is often paraphrased as “Be the change…” (Furthermore, Gandhi’s first name is not “Mahatma” it’s Mohandas. “Mahatma” is an honorific title that means “great soul.” Similarly, the last name of Jesus is not “Christ” — it’s an honorific title which is attached to a person that attains full realization and embodiment — thoughts, words, deeds, interpersonal, societal — of Unity, non-dual, Christ consciousness, perhaps you.)
Here’s what Gandhi said:
“We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do.”
— Mohandas “Mahatma” Karamchand Gandh
One take away from the original quote is Gandhi’s reference to the interplay between the inner and the outer, the collective and the individual. This four-dimensional interplay is a rudimentary expression of an integrally informed paradigm. Four dimensions along two axes — (1) inner-outer and (2) singular-plural — co-arise, correlate, and tetra-evolve. Our intentions, behaviors, cultures, and societies arise as one occasion. Gandhi knew this, or intuited this, and it can be expressed as “Be the change you want to see in the world.”
But what is the world you see? It depends on the depth & breadth of your vision…
In PraxisAletheia, The Mystery School at the Leading Edge of Evolution, we are giving students the cognitive and neurological flexibility to deepen and broaden their minds by complexifying the connections in, and relationships to, the Higher Brain & Higher Heart, and then going to work on evolving themselves, their relationships, their culture, and their societies.
Hierarchical Complexity
Another way to understand “Be the change…” is to understand that our understanding comes from our own meaning-making map of reality. People with different maps will interpret “Be the change…” differently. Within a stage of complexity, you will typically “Be the change…” within the capacity of that stage. This is known as translation, or horizontal development, because it creates change (whether positive or negative) within the stage. The changes proliferate up & down the spiral of development, but one cannot detect the effects at more complex levels of cognition because one does not have the cognitive capacity and neurological capacity to “see” beyond a stage.
What about vertical development, otherwise known as Evolution? Only at later, evolutionary, post-formal stages of development can systems, and systems of systems, begin to be seen and impacted. If your brain is not complex enough, with enough cross-functional firing, your mind will have a very difficult time comparing systems and paradigms in order to create functioning meta-systems and cross-paradigms (fields).
STAGES
9 to 16 |
What is done at this stage? And how is it done? | Changes & End results |
---|---|---|
9
Concrete |
Arithmetic performed, cliques formed, and deals done with division, complex social rules, and coordinating two perspectives of self & other. | Affects one-to-one interrelations, alters social events, reasonable deals |
10
Abstract |
Stereotypes discriminated and logical quantification (none, some, all) performed by making and quantifying propositions. | Improvement to stereotypes and quantifications are made (none, some, all) where no quantification was made before. Improvements to the body of categorical assertions such as “We all die.” or “We are all one.” |
11
Formal |
Argue with empirical or logical evidence and linear, one-dimensional logic by solving problems with one unknown with algebra, logic, and empirical evidence | Improved understanding of causal relationships and underlying variables. Improved use of linear logic: “if-then” “thus” “therefore” “because.” Finding the correct scientific solutions |
12
Systematic |
Construct systems & matrices of multiple variables by coordinating input variables within a context | Better contexts with multiple inputs are created for events and concepts. Better systems are formed from relationships among variables (e.g. legal, corporate, economic, societal, political). |
13
Meta -Systematic |
Construct multi-systems and metasystems out of disparate systems by comparing systems and perspectives and identifying properties of those systems (e.g. isomorphic, complete, etc.) and creating meta-systems out of individual systems | Metasystems and supersystems are formed out of systems of relationships, e.g. contracts and promises. These supersystems allow for emergent properties – properties of the whole that are not seen in the component systems.
At this stage, one can reliably differentiate between modalities at Epoch 5 and Epoch 6. |
14
Paradigmatic |
Fit metasystems together to form new paradigms and show “incomplete” or “inconsistent” aspects of metasystems through a process of synthesizing metasystems. | New and better paradigms can be formed out of multiple metasystems that make other paradigms obsolete. |
15
Cross-Paradigmatic |
Fit paradigms together to form new fields by crossing paradigms, e.g. evolutionary biology + developmental biology = evolutionary developmental biology | New fields are formed out of multiple paradigms |
16
Meta-Cross-Paradigmatic Performative-Recursive |
Reflect on various properties of cross-paradigmatic operations and explain the dynamics and limits of the previous stage of cross-paradigmatic thinking. | The dynamics and limitations of cross-paradigmatic thinking are explained as they are recursively enacted |
