Who are you?
The answer to the question
“Who am I?”
can change over time as your self-identity evolves. Yes, your identity evolves. If it didn’t, you’d still be identified as mommy’s little baby, the 2-year-old that discovered that it had an identify and that certain things were “mine!” By the time you were eight years old, you had a stable idea of your personality traits and dispositions, and whether you felt like a valuable and competent person. But I hope you don’t still self-identify as a 3rd grader!
On a much larger and grander scale than just growing up from childhood into adulthood, your self-identity evolves. We’re ever seeking new and novel horizons, and to get to the unfamiliar territory beyond, sometimes, requires a shift in identity. Taken to its limit, the ultimate shift in identity is a transcendence of the self altogether.
Waking up, growing up
Much of humanity is stuck at the lower levels of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. But if you’re reading this blog right now (and you are) your leading edge is either self-actualization or self-transcendence. Yes, you may be dealing with esteem needs, but if that’s the case, then your leading-edge need is probably self-actualization and substantial portions of your identity (yes, you have different portions of identity) are probably wrapped up in achievements. Indeed, much of western society is wrapped up in achievement. Or, if not achievement, you may be wrapped up in the politics of your identity.
But what happens when you get to the end of achievement, and you’ve achieved all there is to achieve? What happens when you’ve received all the validation and esteem there is to gain from your identity? Then what? Who are you? You will have grown past 3rd grade, so to speak in this analogy, and you’ll be ready to shift to your next, more expanded identity.
Waking up is the process of remembering deeper aspects of your identity. Growing up is remembering, or realizing, the truth of your becoming, Part of your identity — when you really inquire into it — is transcendent to space & time and simultaneously you’re an ancient process that started with the Big Bang 13.88 billion years ago. And realizing this through direct experiences changes the rules of the identity game.
If you’re still heavily dealing with esteem need, then you will barely be able to make room for this information. But for those that are moving into self-transcendence, this information is critical. And we have somewhere for you to go to get your needs met.
